The first Neiman Marcus location in North Carolina, this store is located at SouthPark Mall in Charlotte. The site for the store was an awkward corner between an above-ground parking garage and another large department store, and was atop an existing below-grade parking area. Faced with these challenging constraints, a building envelope was designed to stand out from its surroundings and project an upscale image to shoppers. High-quality materials such as brick and granite provide texture and a counterpoint to the cladding of the existing adjacent structures, while careful setbacks and a sweeping curved wall serve to break down the massing of the typical “big box” suburban department store and provide a dynamic entry into the store. The store is designed to accommodate a future third floor.
Project responsibilities included collaboration with the client and project designer on the shell and core of the building, coordination with various consultants and the client’s in-house retail planning division, and production of permit and pricing documents.
