Battery Park City School

PS/IS 276 is a new 125,000 square-foot elementary and middle school built to serve 1000 elementary and middle school students in Lower Manhattan’s Battery Park City neighborhood. The project is one of the first to be built according to the New York City School Construction Authority’s “Green Schools Guide”, which was developed by Dattner Architects in 2007.

Due to the restricted nature of the site, the school is oriented vertically on 8 floors. Public spaces such as the gymnasium, auditorium, and administrative offices are located on the ground floor. Elementary school classrooms form the base of the building, while middle school classrooms occupy the upper floors. Shared spaces such as the cafeteria and library are located on a transitional floor between the elementary school and middle school portions. The rooftop features an outdoor playground and a photovoltaic solar array.

Project responsibilities included working with the construction administration team in reviewing submittals and approving interior finishes.

The project was featured in AIA New York’s “Design for Decades” exhibition in 2010.
