The first Neiman Marcus location in North Carolina, this store is located at SouthPark Mall in Charlotte. The site for the store was located in an awkward corner between an above-ground parking garage and another large department store, and was atop an existing below-grade parking garage. Faced with these constraints, a building envelope was designed to stand out from its surroundings and project an upscale image to shoppers. High-quality materials such as brick and granite provide texture and a counterpoint to the cladding of the existing adjacent structures, while careful setbacks and a sweeping curved wall serve to break down the massing of the typical “big box” suburban department store and provide a dynamic entry into the store. The store is designed to accommodate a future third floor.
Project responsibilities included collaboration with the client and project designer on the shell and core of the building, coordination with various consultants and the client’s in-house retail planning division, and production of permit and pricing documents.
